Socrates: The Test of Three
25 Aug 2009 by Juliet du Preez

This is an old story that I came across again today. Somehow it touched me deeply - yet again - and I thought I would share it. Perhaps it will also serve as a reminder to you, perhaps it is something new...

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.

One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance, who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students....?"

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three."

"Test of Three?"

"That's correct," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man replied, "actually I just heard about it."

"All right," said Socrates.. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"

"No, on the contrary..."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?"

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

Socrates continued, "You may still pass though, because there is a third test - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really..."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?"

The man was defeated and ashamed and said no more.

This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

 Hi Juliet,
First off - so good to see you here today!!

And this story, wow - it hits it on the head. Three questions, very deeply moving. How often do we pass on information that's not true, based upon something we've heard? Makes me wonder. I honestly try to make sure something is true before moving forward, although there are times when I slip. This is such a stark reminder of just how damaging our words can be...whether they are true or not...

This is positively AWESOME! Thank you so so much for this! I have been trying to talk less since I've become aware that most talk is empty of any true content, it's just talk, blah, blah, blah. But THIS? This is precious! I will remember this one! Thanks so much!

Juliet this is fantastic!!! Thank you so much for sharing this, as I have never heard this story.

My goodness what an amazing idea though...imagine if all of us just took that moment to do the test of 3 before we said something to another, especially about another...

The thing is we see everything in this world from our perspective and what is true to one, is not necessarily true for another. If we can just respect that about each other, I think we may be looking at world peace tomorrow.

Great story! This is something all of us should keep in mind before we open our mouths about other people or before hearing it from someone else. I think I remember reading about this years ago and its a great reminder for all of us.

Juliet -- What a great story! When we've got something to say about somebody else, we should make sure we pass Socrates' "test of three."

Thanks for sharing this story. I had not heard it before and I appreciate the message very much:~)

Good thing one of his students wasn't planning on hurting Socrates, or would that pass the *useful* test?

Great write up and I love how the right question changes focus and insight.

Well, it wouldn't have been something "good" about him.

This story is great and I want to pass it on. However, in the interest of TRUTH . . . can you tell me where you found this story so I have a reference?

Thanks,
Mary

 Hi Mary

I have received the story a couple of times via email - so no official "proof". I think, however, that it is the story and the meaning that count - whether it comes from Socrates or not.

I've had a cursory look on the web. It is mentioned a great deal, but, in my brief search, nothing that seems "official".

 Hi Juliet,
i'm new here and was really 'struck down' by that story. This is a message we need to remind ourselves of daily and i shall recite it to my children.

Socrates, interpreted by Plato in his famous dialogues was an intellectual giant of the ancient world. His method of clarifying things is still relevant today. One can learn so much from 'The Test of Three'! The insights it generates are fantastic. Here is another link towards Socrates, that you may find worth reflecting upon:

A good way to explain that one should not talk anything that is useless and not even true. It makes a lot difference in this generation where most of people spend their time in gossips.
