Juliet du Preez & Cornel Human
An Essay from Juliet
I don't believe in defining myself by the work that I do (which seems to be today's culture), but I think that, perhaps in this instance, that sort of information does provide a starter and then you can move onto my blog for the mains. Desert I think you'll never know ;)
I began, post university, as a civil engineer. I was categorized by society as intellectual, serious, goal-oriented etc. Once in the work place, I found that I didn't enjoy the engineering. I tried a number of different fields - nothing really grabbed me. Finally I landed a job as a researcher of particular industries. I was more suited to this - investigating, understanding and communicating findings (written, not oral; back-office, not front-line i.e. suited to an introvert). And, at least I'd found a position away from the corporate ladder. After four years with the company I was feeling stressed and tired. I resigned to study and practice specialized kinesiology (an holistic, alternative therapy, not to be confused with the study of movement).
It was during this time that I really started my self-discovery work - courses, books, meditation and the kinesiology (this is both mind and body therapy). As a person I grew significantly and I tapped into all sorts of aspects of myself that I would never have thought possible. I have become a much freer person, as well as more authentic. I'm relaxed and I'm happier. I've got creativity and fun in my life. I went from being stuck, to having possibilities; from monotone to colorful; from society's definition to me, Juliet.
Kinesiology is a wonderful form of healing, but I never succeeded in stepping away from clients' pain and not taking it on myself. So, I returned to the research job on a part-time basis. However, things had changed: I had grown. Slowly I started to realise that writing is my passion. Yes, I was writing in my job, but not fully in the way that I wanted. (And I'm not a corporate person). So, I started freelance writing on the side and, well, here I am now, a full-time freelance writer.
Without that time to change and grow I would never have even thought of being involved in a project such as this blog and our application. I would never have believed in myself enough to tackle something so foreign to my upbringing and environment. Now it is a passion.
It is a way that I can communicate with and give to others, that is not as draining for me as kinesiology. I now have the forum to share my experiences and ideas, and my aim is to assist others in their journey, inspire them or bring them enjoyment.
Some Facts About Cornel
Cornel will add something when he remembers, gets round to it or, maybe never. In the meantime, here are a couple of points for some insight:
- He has his own IT business (originally an electrical engineer)
- He is 4th Dan Aikido and has been teaching for over 15 years
- He is absolutely dilly over his two German Shepherds
- He loves to mix music and compile CDs
- He is into mountain biking
He is pretty private, so I think I've mentioned enough without his approval ;)
